FAQ

Can I use compost in place of soil? + -

Compost works best as an additive to soil, rather than a replacement. We've had best results using compost in the range of 30% - 40% of the total soil volume.

If you want to create your own soil mix, a popular mix is 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 horticultural grade vermiculite (coarse), and 1/3 "compost".

Peat moss is usually pretty easy to find at your local garden or home improvement store, but vermiculite can sometimes be difficult to find locally. Perlite will also work in place of the vermiculite, and is easier to find, but vermiculite will do a better job of aerating the soil & retaining moisture and is worth the extra effort to find it.

The "compost" portion should include as many sources of organic compost as possible. What you're looking for is a vast array of different foods for the plant so it can take what it needs to thrive. The Blue Ribbon Organics Compost is derived from a wide variety of sources but feel free to add other organic sources such as worm castings.

What is the pH of the compost? + -

Because the compost is made from recycled materials, the pH varies by batch. It ranges from 7.5 - 7.9, slightly alkaline. The food waste is a huge part of the value in this product, and tends to increase the pH.

Will this compost burn my plants? + -

The short answer is no... and here's why.

This compost is designed as a soil additive and it is NOT a synthetic fertilizer.

By law, synthetic fertilizer products have labels that list only the nutrients immediately available in the product (NPK content). That's why the values on the label are very high and also why it is so easy to burn your plants when using it.

The nutrients in Blue Ribbon Organic Compost are released slowly over time, and predominantly by the biological activity in the soil. These naturally released nutrients do not appear on the label & do not burn your plants!

This is why people get fantastic results with Blue Ribbon Organic Compost, yet when comparing NPK on the label against a synthetic fertilizer, one might think it wouldn't do anything at all.

In addition, the microbial activity working on the compost will release a slew of micronutrients that are not accounted for in NPK. These contribute greatly to the overall health & immunity of the plant.

What are the directions for use? + -

Flower and Vegetable Gardening

Adding to your new garden

Blue Ribbon Organics suggests using 3-4" of our organic compost to be tilled into your existing soil. This application can occur before planting in spring or at the end of the gardening season in fall.

Adding to your existing garden beds

Blue Ribbon Organics suggests adding 1/4-1” of their organic compost to replenish nutrients, help retain moisture during rain events, and add organic matter to your garden soil for healthier plants.

Lawn Application - Topdressing your lawn

Blue Ribbon Organics suggests that you apply our organic compost at a rate of a 1/4-1/2”. This topdressing application should be done in late fall when you are finished cutting your grass for the year. Topdressing your lawn with organic compost will add organic matter to the top layer of your lawn, help retain moisture during the dry periods of the year, and add a natural fertilizer to help kick start your lawn in spring.

Around Trees and Shrubs - Using compost as a mulch

Blue Ribbon Organic Compost can also be used as a natural mulch. This can be applied around trees or shrubs annually at an application rate of 2-3". By using compost as a mulch, you are ensuring your trees or shrubs proper water retention.

What are the ingredients? + -

The compost is made with recycled materials including brush, cut firewood, garden debris, grass clippings, leaves, sod, vegetable waste, and wood chips. Tested by a certified lab, the compost meets OMRI’s standards for use in organic production as well as parameters set by the US Composting Council’s Seal of Testing Assurance program. Blue Ribbon does not compost animal bedding or manure into this product.

Is the compost sterilized? + -

The compost naturally reaches a temperature of 150-160 degrees during the composting process, however there is not a sterilization process run on the product. In addition to the environmental damage caused by a sterilization process (chemicals, energy consumed to produce heat, etc), it would denature the beneficial microbes in the compost that make it work so well.
